about

Dustopian Frequencies is back with its third release Noctures, a split release from Veryan and Everyday Dust. We are deeply happy to welcome the immensely talented Veryan to our humble little imprint.

Both artists are based in remote corners of the Scottish countryside and a conversation about their respectively reclusive tendencies showed them to be kindred spirits. A throwaway comment from ED about the sound of bats flying outside his studio one night led to the artists listing off familiar sounds of their respective surroundings after dark. This would form the initial stimulus for creating Nocturnes.

Veryan heads up the album with ‘Moonlight Lullabies’, an exquisite slow-moving piece that takes the listener deep into the world of the nocturnal forest, evoking both a sense of darkness and of mysterious wonder. Owls hooting, deer barking and mice scrambling in the leaves are reimagined as curious synth tones, dark textures and subdued percussion. The darkness is balanced with what could be interpreted as the coming of dawn towards the end of the piece where Veryan drifts into a lighter and more pensive chapter. A beautifully woven sonic tapestry that illustrates her flare for minimalism and lush sound design.

On ‘As Bats Fly’ Everyday Dust considers perhaps what else might come out under the cover of darkness. An ensemble of eldritch synthesizer voices, transformed woodwinds and tolling bells transport the listener to a strange place where bats command the skies, horns take to the wind and cobwebs glow with ethereal luminescence.
